THE ORIGINS OF THE EVENTS AND EVENT INDUSTRY

Events are a curious hybrid of old and new. Events can be traced back to early history, when communities would gather for religious worship and celebration. Of course, these were not considered events at that time. As society started to create towns and social systems, event venues become an intrinsic dimension of the town planning process. Roman cities often included arenas and amphitheaters for show and events, forums or marketplaces for trading and community events, and shrines ans churches for religious celebration were also evident. As these facilities became embedded in social structures, they became a key part of town planning and, in Europe and Asia at least, they are an essential aspects of the layout and structure of modern towns and cities.

Although this formal approach to events declined during the dark ages and early medieval history , by the 12^th century events were gaining local identity and rationality, with famous annual events such as LORD MAYOR’S show, the great exhibition and the Nottingham goose fair originating in the 13^th century.

In 18^th and 19^th centuries, the industrial revolution produced a wider range of products and equipment. The commensurate growth in the world trade led to the development of trade fairs and exhibitions. Enhanced transportation permitted people to travel further, facilitating growth of the hotel sector. Hotels soon built ballrooms and other facilities suitable for events.

Events venues added a new dimension in the 1970s with the introduction of a new generation of large –scale, multi- purpose venues. Cinemas and sport stadium would seek a greater diversity of events to host, and new – generation cinemas and stadiums would be constructed with this diversity in mind. Today’s events industry encompasses a wide range of event venues, Including:

The evolution of the events reflects the social, political, economical and technological growth of society. For these same reasons, the events sector will also change in future.
